real trailer analysis
Other trailers need to be looked at an analysis so that we can clearly see how to get a realistic trailer and how to film, edit and shoot ours to the best of our ability.
it trailer
'IT (also known as It: Chapter One) is a 2017 American supernatural horror film directed by Andy Muschietti , based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Stephen King. The screenplay is by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman. The film tells the story of seven children in Derry, Maine who are terrorised by the eponymous being, only to face their own personal demons in the process. IT has grossed $327.5 million in the United States and Canada, and $372.9 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $700.4 million, against a production budget of $35 million. making it the 5th most profitable release of 2017 and highest for any horror all-time.'
IT was a very successful film due to when it was released, during the time there was a lot in the news about the 'killer clown craze' making it one of the reasons why it was so highly popular. throughout the trailer there are various different editing techniques which grab the audiences attention. There is use of cool tone editing to make every clip seem more washed out and darker which helps enhances the gloomy effect in the trailer. As well as this the weather is often used to set the scene and create a scarier effect. At the half way point in the trailer (1:30) the pace of clips and music increases, this pace editing is very effective as it entices the audience and reengages them with the trailer. The titles within the trailer are also spread out between scenes, this means the audience needs to red through them, further engaging them with the trailer. For the duration of the film a child is seen, the use of a child creates a different atmosphere as they are seen as more vulnerable making more people want to watch it as from the trailer the young child is shown to be the main victim therefore the audience want to know what happens to him. This child is also some of IT's iconic imagery as the bright yellow coat is remembered throughout the trailer. At the end of the trailer there is a jump scare of the killer, they allow the audience to see the killer throughout the trailer and do not try to hide the clown as this is one of the main parts of the movie plot. |
jigsaw trailer
'Jigsaw is the eighth instalment in the Saw franchise, picking up over a decade after the death of the eponymous Jigsaw killer, during the police investigation of a new succession of murders. The filming began in November 2016, with post-production following in January. The film was released in the United States on October 27, 2017, receiving generally unfavourable reviews from critics, and grossed $103 million worldwide. It finished first at the box office but still marked it the second lowest debut of the franchise'
Even though Jigsaw did not do as well as the other debuts of the franchise it still uses many techniques within the trailer that will be useful for us to analysis and use. At the start of the trailer there is a clear pace and the music build suspense to what is oncoming in the trailer. There are also screenshots/photograph effects used when the police and looking at the first victim, this is effective and it gives a more daunting effect as the audience feel as if someone is watching them. The audience do not see how this victim dies, making the audience still guess about exactly what is going on. clear pace of music at the start. At 50 seconds in the music changes something that is not related to horror in any way the music is very relaxed and does not relate to what is happening, I believe that in this trailer the use of this music is effective as there are a lot of deaths therefore it is still easily known as a horror. This type of music makes the audience feel as if the killer is very calm, making him even more feared. Overall the trailer doesn't give much away at all, it gives a basic plot line through the dialogue however the trailer is mainly just a montage of killings. Furthermore the titles within this trailer are not eye-catching at all, they just blend in with the trailer. |
insidious trailer
'Insidious is a 2010 supernatural horror film directed by James Wan. It is the first instalment in the Insidious franchise, and the third in terms of the series' in-story chronology. The story centres on a couple whose son inexplicably enters a comatose state and becomes a vessel for ghosts in an astral dimension who want to inhabit his body. The film opened with $13.3 million, making it #3 at the US box office behind Hop and Source Code. On a budget of $1.5 million, it has since grossed a total of US$54 million in the US and $43 million internationally, for a total of $97 million worldwide. Insidious was one of, but by far the most, profitable films of 2011'
At the start of the trailer the footage of the family makes is seems as if it is home footage, and makes the audience feel a part of the family. Throughout there is suspenseful music and slower clips are added to build this. However there aren't any jump scares but the trailer makes the audience believe that one is going to appear with the use of the music and filming techniques. There is a massive increase in the pace of the film and music at 1:30 just before the trailer ends giving it a larger impact. This trailer is also relativity shorter than the other ones looked at 1:49 which gives is a larger impact in a way. |
how this will impact us - popular choices that come up
IT
As a group we felt like it was important to use certain aspects of this trailer such as the use of a child for more dramatic effect, the cool tone editing and to try and create an iconic image that runs through the trailer.
JIGSAW
we took ideas from this trailer such as the fast pace shots of the killings and the idea that you do not know how the victims were captured, just how they were tortured, as we felt like this made the audience want to watch more.
INSIDIOUS
We found less inspiration from insidious however this is most likely mainly due to it being a different genre to what ours is. However we did like the shortness of the trailer as we believed it gave a greater impact and was more easy to remember.
overall - what we will include from this
- use of a child in trailer
- cool tone editing
- iconic image that is seen throughout
- fast pace shots for killings
- shorter trailer
